Because Just Because It’s on the Shelf Doesn’t Mean It’s Always Safe

We’ve all done it—picked up a bottle of ibuprofen, allergy meds, or cough syrup without thinking twice. No prescription? No problem, right?

But here’s the truth: over-the-counter (OTC) meds can still cause serious issues—especially when mixed with prescriptions, certain health conditions, or even each other.

Let’s clear up a few common myths, and talk about when it’s smart to check in with your pharmacist (spoiler: it’s more often than you think).

Myth #1: If It’s Sold Without a Prescription, It’s Totally Safe

Not always. OTC medications are safe when used correctly—but that doesn’t mean they’re risk-free. Take too much, use them too often, or combine them with the wrong things, and they can cause some real problems.

A few quick examples:

  • Ibuprofen and naproxen can cause stomach bleeding if overused—or if you’re on blood thinners.
  • Decongestants like pseudoephedrine can raise blood pressure.

Antihistamines may cause drowsiness, especially in older adults.

Myth #2: You Can Mix and Match as Long as They’re OTC

Big nope.

That cold medicine? It might already have Tylenol (acetaminophen) in it—and if you take more Tylenol on top of that, you could easily go over the safe daily limit without realizing it.

The same goes for allergy meds, pain relievers, and sleep aids. Some ingredients show up in multiple places, and doubling up can be dangerous.

Myth #3: You Don’t Need to Tell Your Pharmacist About OTC Meds

Actually—you do. Because your pharmacist isn’t just there for prescriptions. We’re trained to spot interactions, side effects, and red flags that even your doctor might not catch if they don’t know what you’re taking.

Even things like vitamins, herbal supplements, and energy drinks can interact with medications. So yes, we want to know about your turmeric gummies and daily dose of magnesium, too.

So… What Should You Do?

Keep it simple:

  • Don’t mix meds unless you know they’re safe together
  • Follow dosing instructions exactly (more ≠ better)
  • Check with your pharmacist if you’re starting something new, especially if you take prescriptions

And if you’re not sure—ask. That’s what we’re here for.
